Kidangannoor is a village in Pathanamthitta district in the state of Kerala, India.[1] It is on the route between Aranmula (famous for its boat races) and Pathanamthitta (en route to the holy piligrimage destination of Sabarimala.It is well connected to various places such as Chengannur (8 km), Pandalam (9 km), Aranmula (4 km), Kozhencherry (7.5 km), Pathanamthitta (16 km) by different roads. It is one of the fastest grown villages in Kerala. It is nearly 4 km from the border of Pathanamthitta & Alappuzha districts. It is about 5 km east of Mulakkuzha (Alappuzha district) on MC road. (Mulakkuzha is between Chengannur and Pandalam on MC Road)
Demographics
As of 2001 India census, Kidangannur had a population of 16364 with 7665 males and 8699 females.[1]
Famous personalities
It is the birthplace of the father of modern Malayalam, Rev. George Mathan. Mathan wrote the first grammar book in Malayalam called "Malayanmayude Vyakaranam" and other books like "Satyavadakhedam", "Marumakkathaya Sampradayam" and many others. He was born in the Puliyelil family and did most of his writing in his ancestral house in Kidangannoor, although he spent most of his life in Mallapally and Kottayam. He worked tirelessly with Rev.Hermann Gundert and other priests to save Malayalam from the onslaught of Tamil, which was the official language in Kerala at that time. Writer, poet, journalist, and blogger John P. Matthew, who also hails from Puliyelil family was born in Kidangannoor, though he later settled in Bombay.
Mathews Mathew Kidangannur is another famous personality from Kidangannur. Mathews hails from Mundakathil family. He is a writer, poet and farming journalist who received international award from Indian Minister of Agriculture for his valuable contributions to Indian Agriculture Industry.
Aassan Malayil Kesavan Nair was recognised as "GURU" of Kidangannoor. Kesavan Nair, a retired Govt. Teacher was known for his contributions to the community by encouraging quality basic education to the children at Aranmula and Mezhuveli Panchayats. He was born in the Aassan Malayil family, Kidangannoor. Although he lived as a Grihasthashrami, he continued his spiritual practice throughout his life.
Trivia
The village's other attractions are proximity to Aranmula and Sabarimala (both holy places of pilgrimage and worship for Hindus), the Syrian Christian Orthodox Pilgrimage Center and Church, nearby Mezhuveli, a local market, schools, etc. The KGS Aranmula Airport is coming in the vicinity of Kidangannoor. The airport will start operations for flights within India soon and will be upgraded later to an international airport. This airport will serve the pilgrims visiting the Hindu holy shrine at Sabarimala and also the Maramon Convention of the Christians.
The majority of the residents are Christians and Hindus. Therefore religious festivals of Christians and Hindus are observed every year. Worth mentioning are the festivals in the Syrian Christian Churches (Jacobites and Orthodox) at Mezhuveli with its kathina fireworks and rally which is observed every year with great fanfare. The Hindu temple festivals are also conducted every year with great pomp and fanfare.
