Khonuu (Russian: Хонуу) is a rural locality (a selo) and the administrative center of Momsky District of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located on the right bank of the Indigirka River. Population: 2,476 (2010 Census);[1] 2,494 (2002 Census);[4] 3,057 (1989 Census).[5]
Geography
Khonuu is located approximately 800 km north-east of the republic's capital Yakutsk, in the lowlands between the Moma Mountains to the north-east and the Chersky Range to the south-west. It is also situated on the right bank of the Indigirka, just downstream of the confluence with its tributary the Moma.
History
The village was officially founded in 1851, with the construction of a Russian Orthodox church as centre for a new settlement in the region, which was inhabited by Yakuts and Evens. It has been the adminsitrative centre of the Momsky District (Ulus) since 1931.[6]
Demographics
Yakuts, who are primarily hunters or reindeer herders, make up 67% of the village's population. Other ethnicities include Russians (15.1%), Evens (11.8%), Evenks (0.5%), Yukaghirs (0.1%) and other nationalities (5.5%).
Transportation
There are no railroads or paved roads to the town, but there is a flight service to Yakutsk via the nearby Moma Airport.[7]
