Khatana

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Khatana are a clan (Gotra) of the Gujjars, an ethnic group with populations in India and Pakistan. There is a high population of Khatana in the Indian town of Sohna and its surrounding villages.[1][2]

According to Bards of Gurjars, the area beyond Kashmir in earlier period was called as Khattan in India. There is a place Khotan in Xinjiang. It is now known as Hotan. The Khatana Gujjars are said to have migrated to Khotan and from there elsewhere. The Gujjar kings serving as feudatories of Gujjar Empire, were called the Rana of Khattan and hence Khatana. After the fall of Gujjars Empire in 954AD, the other Gurjars kingdoms like Gurjar Chauhan of Ajmer, Gurjar Tanwar of Delhi, Gurjar Chadellas of Kalinjar, Gurjar Solankis of Patan, Gurjar Parmars of Malwa, Ujjain, and the former Imperials the Gurjar Pratihar of Kannuaj stopped supporting them and started fighting among themselves. Jai Pal Khatana was defeated by Mahmud Gaznavi in the Battle of Peshawar while his son Anand Pal Khatana was defeated in a crucial battle in Chhachh.[3]
