Khairatabad (Telugu: ఖైరతాబాదు) is in Hyderabad, India. It is the biggest assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh.
It has a major road junction of five roads called the Khairatabad circle, among the busiest in the city. The roads leading from the junction are towards and from Somajiguda, Ameerpet, Hussain sagar, Lakdi-ka-pul, and Anandnagar. One such extension of Khairatabad circle is the Raj Bhavan Road, where the residence of the Governor of Andhra Pradesh is located.[1] There are many notable institutions and organizations that include Institution of Engineers, Administrative Staff College of India, Road Transport Authority (RTA), APTRANSCO & APGENCO, HMWS&SB, Nasr School, Zilla Parishad, ZEE Telefilms, Press Club, Laymen's Evangelical Church Shadan Group of Educational Institutions etc.,[2]
The Vishweshwaraiah flyover starts at the circle and leads to Hussain sagar lake.
The area is named after a Khairunnissa whose tomb is located next to the Khairtabad Mosque though the access is to the backside of the monument. (Speculation) This tomb could be of Khair-un-Nissa, the wife of Captain James Achilles Kirkpatrick mentioned in the 2002 book White Mughals by William Dalrymple, though the book doesn't mention any such tomb.
The Idol and the Ganesh Chathurthi
Main article: Khairtabad Ganesh
The largest Lord Ganesh Idol in the world is installed at the Khairtabad State Library during the Ganesh chaturthi festival and is immersed at Hussain sagar lake.
All the local people participate in the 11-day festival and thousands of people from many places, not only in and around Hyderabad but also throughout India, visit the Idol and get the blessings of the Lord Ganesh. On the 11th day, a big procession takes place and the idol is carried to the Hussain Sagar Lake. After immersing the idol, the festival ends.
The local people formed a committee, 'Ganesh Utsav Committee, Khairtabad' www.ganapathideva.org, to maintain the proceedings during the festival days. The Singari's family is dedicated in conducting of the Lord Ganesh festival since 1954. Many poor families survive by selling many products to the visitors.
Three months prior to the festival day, Ganesh Chathurthi, the construction of the idol begins. Nearly 200 workers lead by an sculpturist works day and night for three months to construct the biggest idol, nearly 58 feet height.
