Khabib Abdulmanapovich Nurmagomedov (Russian: Хабиб Абдулманапович Нурмагомедов; Avar: ХIабиб НурмухIаммадов; born September 20, 1988) is a Russian undefeated mixed martial artist, a multiple Combat Sambo World Champion and a Judo black belt who is currently fighting in the lightweight division for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is of Avar origin. He currently holds one of the longest undefeated streaks in MMA with 21 straight wins and 0 losses. As of January 17, 2014, he is #7 in official UFC lightweight rankings.[4]

Background

Nurmagomedov was born in 1988 during the former Soviet Union in the village of Silde in modern-day Dagestan, Russia. He belongs to the Avar ethnic group, a collective term, Avar-Andi-Dido (Tsez) peoples, that is often used to describe probably more than fifteen distinct ethnic groups living in the foothills of the mountain slopes Russia's Dagestan Republic and who are Sunni Muslim. During his childhood, he began wrestling under his father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. His father has a black belt in Judo under Vladimir Nevzorov and Petr Butryi, and is also a Sambo Ukrainian National Champion and national master of sports in Freestyle Wrestling.[5] Nurmagomedov worked 5 years in Freestyle Wrestling, but didn't achieve good results and began studying Judo under Jafar Jafarov.[6]

After high school, Khabib enrolled to study economics in the State University of the Ministry of Finance in Makhachkala.
