Keyano College is located in the heart of the oil sands in Fort McMurray and offers specialized training to more than 2800 full-time students and over 13,000 part-time students. The main Clearwater Campus is located in downtown Fort McMurray with the Suncor Energy Industrial Campus located in the Gregoire Industrial Park and a new campus in Fort Chipewyan. Outreach campuses are located in Anzac, Janvier and Conklin. The college is also a member of the Alberta Rural Development Network.
History
Keyano College opened in Fort McMurray in 1965 as the Alberta Vocational Centre (AVC). The official opening ceremonies were held on January 26, 1966. In 1975 the College was reopened under its current name, "Keyano", which is a Cree word which, roughly translated, means, "Sharing". The college's slogan was further adapted from that to be "Yours, Mine and Ours".[2]
In 1978 Keyano College went public and became a community college, when the province appointed a Board of Governors to serve as the decision-making body for the institution.
Keyano College has grown to become a modern series of buildings on many campuses.
Programs Offered
Students can choose from certificate and diploma programs in a wide variety of areas, such as Aboriginal Entrepreneurship, Business Administration, College & Career Preparation, Childhood Studies, Bachelor of Education, EMT, Environmental Technology, Fitness Leadership & Movement, Bachelor of Physical Education (Kinesiology), Office Administration, Practical Nurse, Human Resources Management, Social Work, and University Studies. A number of trades programs are also offered, such as Mechanical Construction Trades Preparation, Heavy Equipment Technician – FINNtech (a partnership with Finning), Power and Process Engineering, and more! There are one- and two-year university transfer programs in a variety of disciplines with collaborative degrees in Nursing and Elementary Education. In partnership with other institutions and national industry organizations, Keyano offers quality, accredited programs leading to nationally recognized professional certifications including Occupational Health & Safety, Supply Management and much more. Keyano is dedicated to providing the best education possible, which is why many programs offer an apprenticeship opportunity. By partnering with industry leaders, our students are given the chance to work in their job of choice before graduating. One of the newest programs, FINNtech, is a partnership with Finning that trains Heavy Equipment Technicians through theory and technical training by alternating classroom time and working at a Finning site. Apprenticeship programs are also offered in Carpentry, Crane and Hoisting Operator (Mobile and Tower), Electrician, Heavy Equipment Technician, Millwright, Steamfitter/Pipefitter, and Welding. To make entering the workforce an easier process, Keyano is currently looking into pre-employment programs as an alternative to traditional apprenticeship training. First-rate technology is also used to provide the Keyano Advantage, which is why a new Oilsands Power & Process Engineering Laboratory is under construction. This facility, which was funded in part by industry leaders, will begin training students in January 2014.
Scholarships and Bursaries
Each Fall, Keyano hosts a Student Awards ceremony where sponsors give out their awards to deserving students. In November 2012, over $350,000 was awarded to 235 students.
Student life
Keyano’s own theatre offers concerts (like George Canyon and Rick Mercer) and plays (Calendar Girls, Extremities) as well as lectures and guest speakers (most recent being CTV’s Seamus O’Regan and Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea). Events Wood Buffalo also offers a plethora of activities for all age groups, including more concerts and festivals (like Interplay and Nexen’s Canada Rocks). Check out a Huskies Hockey game at the Casman Centre. Keyano also has Basketball, Volleyball and Soccer. The Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre offers a full service gym. The annual One on One banquet features great athletes, like last year’s Wayne Gretzky. There’s also ice fishing, learning about the oil sands at the Oil Sands Discovery Centre, going back in time at Heritage Park, or rock climbing at the world-class MacDonald Island! If none of this sounds appealing to you, you can always check out Connect’s 101 Things to Do in Wood Buffalo.
Athletics
Sports teams include: hockey, basketball, volleyball, soccer, cross country running, and futsal.
Keyano will be the host for the ACAC Men’s Basketball and Men’s Volleyball Championships during February 2013.
