Kevin MacLeod (composer)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kevin MacLeod (born in Green Bay, Wisconsin) is a music and soundtrack composer, known for his work on movies and his distribution of royalty-free music through his website, Incompetech. MacLeod has made around 1000 pieces of music freely available for download.[1][2] His music is especially popular among online content creators, especially those on YouTube,[3] and he is listed as composer on over 1000 films on IMDb.[4] His composition "Cupid's Revenge" was used in an Android and iOS game by GameEon known as 'Ball: Infinite Challenge'.[5][6]

MacLeod's most commonly recognized compositions are "Merry Go", "The Cannery", "Cut and Run", "Killing Time" and, probably his most recognized, "Spazzmatica Polka". Some other well known songs are "Fluffing a Duck", "Dirt Rhodes", "Hustle", "Gaslamp Funworks" and "Scheming Weasel faster".

MacLeod and Creative Commons Distribution

The emergence of downloadable media has led to new methods of licensing and distribution of creative works. In music, this has resulted in new distribution methods and businesses. MacLeod credits the broad distribution of his music, and its popularity in movies, YouTube videos, and video games, to his use of Creative Commons licensing.[7]

MacLeod distributes music using a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY).[8] According to the Creative Commons website, "This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation."[9] MacLeod also sells a "No Attribution" license to those who require different distribution terms than those of the Creative Commons License.[10]
