In the 2008 elections Davis stood for Labour in the Te Tai Tokerau seat. He was defeated by the incumbent Hone Harawira but was still elected into the 49th New Zealand Parliament by way of the party list.[1]

He was Labour's candidate in the 2011 Te Tai Tokerau by-election (again defeated by Harawira) and unsuccessfully contested the seat at the General election later in the year.[2] After placing second to Harawira three times and losing his seat at the 2011 election, Davis announced his retirement from politics.[3] Nonetheless, political commentator Vernon Small reported of speculations that Labour list MP Clayton Cosgrove would contest Christchurch East if Lianne Dalziel's Christchurch mayoral candidacy were to be successful, and Cosgrove winning the electorate would vacate a list seat, with Davis then coming back into Parliament as a strong Shearer supporter.[4]
