Kehrsatz is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Kehrsatz is first mentioned in 1281 as Kersaz.[3]

Geography

Kehrsatz has an area, as of 2009, of 4.44 km2 (1.71 sq mi). Of this area, 2.42 km2 (0.93 sq mi) or 54.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.99 km2 (0.38 sq mi) or 22.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.94 km2 (0.36 sq mi) or 21.2% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.06 km2 (15 acres) or 1.4% is either rivers or lakes and 0.02 km2 (4.9 acres) or 0.5% is unproductive land.[4]

Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 1.6% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 14.4% and transportation infrastructure made up 4.1%. 20.7% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.6% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 33.1% is used for growing crops and 18.9% is pastures, while 2.5% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[4]

The municipality is located on a terrasse on the south-east slope of the Gurten.

Demographics

Kehrsatz has a population (as of 31 December 2012) of 4,120.[1] As of 2007, 14.8% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 7.1%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (86.9%), with French being second most common ( 2.0%) and Italian being third ( 1.9%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 29.1% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (20.5%), the FDP (18.6%) and the Green Party (11.3%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 23.3% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 62.5% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 14.3%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Kehrsatz about 78.5% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Kehrsatz has an unemployment rate of 2.02%. As of 2005, there were 65 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 19 businesses involved in this sector. 185 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 35 businesses in this sector. 466 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 75 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
