Colonel Kayode Are (Rtd) is a former Nigerian army officer. Are served in the Directorate of Military Intelligence up until he was retired during the army purges initiated by the late Nigerian dictator, General Sani Abacha. At the advent of democratic rule Are was appointed as the Director-General of the State Security Service, a position he held throughout the two terms of President Olusegun Obasanjo (1999-2007). He was replaced by Afakiriya Gadzama in 2007 by President Umaru Yar'Adua.[1]
Director General of the SSS
Kayode Are is an Owu by origin. He had previously served with General Aliyu Gusau at the Directorate of Military Intelligence during his time in the army. In 1999, Gusau the newly appointed National Security adviser recommended Are to president Olusegun Obasanjo.[2] Obasanjo is also of Owu stock.
Deputy National Security Adviser
In April 2010 Kayode Are was appointed Deputy National Security Adviser by President Goodluck Jonathan.[1] This was a newly created position.[3] When Aliyu Gusau resigned as National Security Advisor (NSA), Kayode Are took over as Acting NSA.[1] On 1 October 2010 during the 50 years Golden Jubilee Anniversary there was a bomb blast in Abuja.[4] Jonathan dismissed Are and appointed General Owoye Andrew Azazi as NSA, effective 4 October 2010. The announcement of the change said "The President thanked the outgoing NSA for his services, and wished him well in his future endeavours".[5]
