The discography of Katy Perry, an American singer-songwriter and musician, consists of four studio albums, one live album, one extended play (EP), nineteen singles as a solo artist, as well as three as a featured artist, and three promotional singles. In 2001, at the age of fifteen, Perry released a self-titled gospel album under her birth name Katy Hudson, which failed to chart in any music market.[4] She subsequently recorded an album at the age of seventeen with producer Glen Ballard and record label Island Def Jam; the album failed, and was not released. In 2004, she signed to Columbia Records and started work on her third album, but was dropped again before it could be released. Perry eventually signed to Capitol and released her debut pop album, One of the Boys.[5]
A promotional single, "Ur So Gay", was released in November 2007 as form of promotion to generate an internet buzz around the artist.[5] The lead single of One of the Boys, "I Kissed a Girl", was released in May 2008 and topped the charts around the world, including the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, as well as the charts in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The album was released in June and debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200, later being certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). "Hot n Cold" was released as the next single and also topped the charts in Canada, Germany and the Netherlands. Both "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot n Cold" were certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA. Subsequent singles from the album include "Thinking of You" and "Waking Up in Vegas", the latter of which reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Throughout 2009 and 2010, Perry was featured on two singles. The first was on Colorado-based band 3OH!3's song "Starstrukk", and the second was a collaboration with Timbaland on "If We Ever Meet Again", from his album Shock Value II. Both singles reached the top ten in Australia, Ireland, and the UK. Perry also performed for MTV Unplugged and a live album of the performance was released in November 2009.
Teenage Dream, Perry's third studio album, was released in August 2010 and debuted at number one in the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. The album saw the release of six singles, five of which – "California Gurls", which features rapper Snoop Dogg, "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "E.T." (featuring rapper Kanye West) and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" – topped charts around the world. The five singles all reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and with this accomplishment Perry became the first woman and only the second artist next to Michael Jackson to attain five number-one singles from one album.[6] The album was re-released in March 2012 with the singles "Part of Me", which became her sixth number one and seventh top-ten hit from this album as well as the final single "Wide Awake", which reached the top ten of multiple countries worldwide including peaking at number two in the U.S.
In November 2012, Katy Perry began working on her fourth studio album Prism, describing the record as having "darker elements".[7] The album was preceded by the lead single, "Roar", reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and marking Perry's eight number one single in the US.[8] The song also reached number one in other countries, including Canada, Australia, Ireland and the United Kingdom. In the UK, "Roar" became one of the fastest-selling singles, selling over 600,000 copies within a month of its release and has since been certified platinum.[9] "Unconditionally" was released as the album's second single on October 16, 2013.[10] Prism was released on 22 October 2013, and became an international success, debuting at number one in a number of countries including Australia, Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom and the United States. The album also produced promotional singles "Dark Horse" and "Walking on Air". Later "Dark Horse" was released as the third official single, reaching the top ten in Canada with a sixth position-peak and the top five in New Zealand and United States respectively reaching number one.
Katy Perry has sold 49,897,000 digital singles and 4,333,000 albums in the United States.[11] Perry is also the best selling digital singles artist in US according to RIAA.[12] As of October 2013, Perry had sold roughly over 11 million albums and 81 million singles worldwide and her singles are some of the best-selling worldwide.[13][14]
