Katraj is suburb of Pune in Maharashtra state of India and within the jurisdiction of Pune Municipal Corporation. The adjacent hill is called Katraj Ghat (mountain pass). Katraj Snake Park is located at Katraj. It lies on the Mumbai - Chennai National Highway. It is one of the southernmost areas of the city.

Katraj Tunnels

In olden times, the road from Pune to Satara went over the top of the hill. A tunnel (the old tunnel) was constructed when two-lane national highway, NH4, was constructed in 1960s.[citation needed] A new tunnel was bored through the hill for widening the highway to four lanes in 2007.

Old Katraj Tunnel

The old tunnel is located on Katraj ghat. It is used by MSRTC buses and other vehicles from Swargate to south Maharashtra and few travelling in Konkan area and on the return route. Though there is no engraved board on the tunnel, there are records. The tunnel was constructed during year 1900 by a contractor named Vittul Sayanna. Until that time, rail & road route to Satara was via Saswad-Neera-Lonand. Sayanna also built the MES Boys' High school (also called Perugate High school)in 1904.

New Katraj Tunnel

The New Katraj Tunnel is located on the NH 4, Pune, India. It is a three-lane tunnel. The tunnel is 1,338 metre long. This tunnel replaced the Old Katraj Tunnel. The road includes construction of an entirely new tunnel to bypass the older routes and one of the tallest viaduct in India (510 meters). The construction was undertaken by ShaktiKumar Sancheti.

Katraj Ghat

Katraj Ghat (mountain pass) begins at the south of Katraj village. At the southern end of the ghat, the new alignment of NH4 through the New Katraj Tunnel merges with the old alignment of the highway.

Katraj Lake

This Lake is located in Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Katraj village. This lake is spread over 17 hectares (42 acres). The lake is surrounded by hills and trees. The lake is good for Boating. The lake is surrounded on three sides by the Katraj Snake Park
