Kathleen "Bird" York is an American actress, screenwriter and songwriter-recording artist. She was nominated for Academy Award for best original song "In the Deep" from the 2004 film Crash.[1] She is known for her roles in television series Vengeance Unlimited, The West Wing, and The Client List.

Life and career

York was born in Los Angeles, California and raised in a family of six kids in Chicago; her mother died when she was 11, and her father died four years later. Amid the family upheaval that followed, York was homeless for about year in Chicago when she was 15-16. She finally relocated to Los Angeles around the time she turned 18.[2] She made her TV debut with role as Little Betty in CBS primetime soap opera Dallas (1984-1985). She is known for her critically acclaimed performance as Naomi Judd in the NBC miniseries Naomi & Wynonna: Love Can Build a Bridge (1995).[3]

York was a series regular in the ABC series Vengeance Unlimited and Aaron's Way for NBC. Her film credits include Cries of Silence, The Big Day, Ball Don't Lie. She played recurring roles in Murder One, The O.C and Desperate Housewives. She also was a series regular in season one of The Client List in 2012.[4][5]

Musically, York achieved global recognition with her song "In the Deep", (co-written with Michael Becker) which appears on her album Wicked Little High and was written for the 2005 film Crash. "In the Deep" was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song with York performing the song live at the 78th Academy Awards in 2006. York's other music credits include the main theme song in Sony Pictures Seven Pounds' as well as featured song placements in House, American Idol, Nip/Tuck, CSI: NY, In Justice, Jake 2.0 Warehouse 13 and So You Think You Can Dance. Bird's earlier releases include the self titled Bird York. Her EP Have No Fear was released independently in 2008.

As a screenwriter, York developed projects for John Wells Warner Brothers, Sony, Paramount and Fox Broadcasting Network. She is an alumnus of the Showrunners Training Program facilitated by the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
