The Katherine Region also known as the Lower Top End is one of the five regions in the Northern Territory. It is located at the lower half of the Top End and borders with Western Australia and Queensland as well as the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Katherine region covers an area of 336,674 km2 (129,991 sq mi), and has a population of 18,646 making it the third most populous region in the Northern Territory. The main centre in the region is Katherine which is the fourth largest population centre of the Northern Territory.
Geography
The region area extends from the border of Western Australia to the border of Queensland and the Gulf of Carpentaria. The region borders with the Alice Springs Region and the Barkly Tableland region and to the north the Darwin and Arnhem Land.
The climate of the region is tropical monsoon with a wet and dry season. Temperatures do not fluctuate widely throughout the year, though it can range from overnight lows of 15 degrees Celsius in the dry season (April to September) to daily highs of 33 degrees Celsius in the wet season (October to March).
