Katherine Lynch's Wonderwomen is a six-part Irish comedy television programme broadcast on RTÉ Two. It stars comedienne Katherine Lynch, who also co-wrote and co-produced the series alongside Warren Meyler. It was the first production by WAKA TV, a company established by Lynch and Myler to produce television series.[1]

Background

Lynch began her career as part of the Irish gay scene where she had the stage name Busty Lycra.[2] She won Miss Alternative Ireland in 1998[3] with a show produced by Warren Meyler from County Wexford.[4][2][5][6] Music manager and judge on The X Factor, Louis Walsh was on the judging panel.[3]

Meyler and Lynch adapted their characters for television and produced three shows; Katherine Lynch's Working Girls, Katherine Lynch's Wonderwomen and An Audience with Katherine Lynch.[5] Her shows have a strong following in the Irish gay scene due to her background.[5]

Katherine Lynch's Wonderwomen commenced broadcasting on 20 October 2008.[2] It succeeded Katherine Lynch's Working Girls, the comedienne's first television series, and preceded An Audience with Katherine Lynch. Wonderwomen focused on the exploits of four characters, Singin' Bernie Walsh, Sheila Sheik who both featured in Working Girls, and two new characters, Liz Hurley and Dalkey Dunphy Davenport.[7]

Characters

The show features four characters over its six episodes. Liz Hurley is described as a "sexually confused small-town girl of 35 who still lives at home with the Mammy, coaches the local ladies' GAA team, plays bass in small-town AC/DC Tribute act 50-50".[2] When asked by the Irish Independent which was her favourite character she initially declared it was "like asking a woman to pick her favourite child" but, when further prompted by the newspaper, chose Hurley. According to the RTÉ Guide, Bernie Walsh, another of Lynch's creations, is her favourite character.[8] Walsh is a country and western singer with an album, Friends in Hi Aces, featuring songs such as "Start Packin' the Van (Dundalk, Dundalk)", "My Van" and "Stand By Your Van", to sell.[8] The character has even performed on The Late Late Show.[3]

The newly introduced characters in Wonderwomen are Sheila Sheik and Dalkey Dunphy Davenport. Sheila Sheik is a female bellydancer from Tallaght, County Dublin, with an Egyptian husband.[8] Dalkey Dunphy Davenport is a teenage blogger from Ballsbridge who streams live online from her hotel suite in Dublin.[9] Dunphy Davenport is described as "the Peaches Geldof-obsessed mall rat with the orange perma-tan, the fluorescent smile, the 3 inch false eye-lashes and the thousand euro handbag who... 'ooooh my gawd is just loike soooooooo booooored!'".[10]

A resurrected version of eighty-foot supermodel Busty Lycra, portrayed as a foot fetish model and porn star from Northern Ireland who returns from Los Angeles when her career is destroyed by a verucca in her own foot,[2][8] who had previously featured in Working Girls, was removed from Wonderwomen amidst concerns about perceived rudeness expressed by RTÉ.[2]
