Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP) was a political party based in Karnataka, a state in Southern India. It was headed by B. S. Yeddyurappa. It has merged with Bharatiya Janata Party in January 2014.

History

Although registered by Padmanabha Prasanna in April 2011, the KJP was actually launched by former Chief Minister of Karnataka B. S. Yeddyurappa and he assumed its leadership in late 2012. Yeddyurappa resigned as a Member of Legislative Assembly and from the primary membership of Bharatiya Janata Party on 30 November 2012, and formally launched the KJP at a convention at Haveri on 9 December 2012.[2][3][4][5]

Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, 2013

In the Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, 2013, Karnataka Janatha Paksha won six of the 203 seats it contested. It restricted the Bharathiya Janatha Party to 40 seats, compared to the 121 it had in the outgoing assembly. KJP secured almost 10% of the vote.[6]

Support for National Democratic Alliance and subsequent merger

Despite the fact that the KJP had broken away from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Yeddyurappa announced in September 2013 that it would support the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.[7]

On 2nd January, 2014 Yeddyurappa announced that KJP will merge with the BJP and will contest the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections as one party.[8]
