Kanva Shakha (Sanskrit:काण्व शाखा) is the oldest shakha ("branch") of Shukla Yajurveda. The tradition is followed mostly in Salem, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Karnataka, parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. This Shakha is prevalent from time even when Shankaracharya was born. The Acharya (main guru) for Shukla Yajurveda is Yajnavalkya.

The main Vedas for Kanva Shakha are Kanva Samhita .The brahmana book is Kanva Shatapatha Brahmana. The main upanishads for Kanva Shakha are Ishavasya Upanishad and Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. The Shrauta Sutra for Kanva Shakha is Katyayana Shrauta Sutra and the Grhya Sutra is Paraskara Grhya Sutram.

Some major Achrayas who belong to Kanva Shakha are Sureshvaracharya(Mandana Mishra) who was disciple of Shankaracharya and Madhvacharya founder of Dwaita Siddahanta , great Dattareya avatar of Akkalkot Swami Samarth was born in Kanva Shakha.

Traditions

It has a distinct style of chanting as compared to Madhyandina Shakha of Shukla Yajurveda. The Samhita portion consists of 211 more mantras than Madhyandina Shakha.
