Kanet
The Kanet are Hindu caste found in the state of Himachal Pradesh in North India.[1]
History and origin
The word Kanet is said to be derived from the Sanskrit word kunit, which means indifference to caste rules, and the community is said to be descended from Rajputs who abandoned their caste customs. According to other traditions, the word means the kinsmen of Kinu, a legendary warrior. According to Hari Krishan Mittoo author of numerous books on Himachal, the Kanets are descendents of Kunindas who once ruled area between Beas and Yamuna.
In Kullu, the community has three groups, the Khash, Rahu and Niru, while in Bashahr, they have two sub-divisions, the Khash and Karan.[2]
Distribution
The Kanet are found throughout eastern Himachal Pradesh, occupying the whole of Suket, Kullu, Mandi and Sirmur and parts of Shimla.
