The Kandy Clock Tower is located in the Kandy CBD on the intersections of Sri Dalada Veediya, S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike Mawatha and Hiragedara Mawatha. A Landmark of the city the clock tower was built near to the Isamail Building in 1950 by Haji Mohomed Ismail as a monument and in memory of his son Mohomed Zacky Ismail, who lost is life in an accident in Kadugannawa in August, 1947.[1]
The land for the tower was acquired by the Kandy Municipal Council, while the machinery and equipment needed was brought over from the United Kingdom. With its completion it was declared open by the then Prime Minister the D.S. Senanayake and the Mayor of Kandy E. L. Senanayake.
The Clock Tower was designed by Shirley de Alwis who was considered the best architect in Sri Lanka at the time. Its design is influenced by the Kandyan style and incorporates elements of the Temple of the Tooth and the palace of the King of Kandy on its facade.[2]
