Kanchikacherla is a small town in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, India. It is about 35 km from the city of Vijayawada on National Highway 9.

Transport

The town has an APSRTC bus station, with many buses connecting to the nearby villages and towns. Bus is the major means of transportation for resident movement to other towns and villages. Buses are being replaced by automobiles. Due to the drastic increase in the number of automobiles providing transportation services to nearby villages, APSRTC cut down its bus services.[citation needed] Bicycles are primarily used for internal transportation. Recently, scooters and motorcycles are rapidly replacing the bicycle.

The town's development is attributed largely to its location on the highway and has a linear settlement pattern. Other towns in the vicinity of Kanchikacherla are Nandigama, Ibrahimpatnam and the city Vijayawada.

Economy

The region around the town has fertile soil and irrigation is rain dependent and sometimes supported by the canals of the river, Krishna. The regions major crops include tobacco and cotton.[citation needed] Kanchikacherla is famous for lorry suppliers for the ground transportation of goods. The primary shopping malls are situated alongside National Highway 9, with a few on the main road of Jujjur. The town has many wholesale and retail businesses, including garments, pulses, cereals and other edible products, fancy markets, fertilizers, pharmacy and metal.[citation needed]

Politics

Kanchikacherla is a politically active town with the majority of voters and leaders from the Kamma, Kapu and Dalit communities.[citation needed] Telugu Desam party has a strong hold on various communities of the town due to the great leadership skills exhibited by Late Devineni Venkata Ramana[citation needed]. Kanchikacherla is the birthplace of the andhrapradesh dalith movements,[citation needed] Gokarajupallie dalit movement,[citation needed], kancherla kotesu dalit movement[citation needed] and chillakalludalit movements.[citation needed] The three major dalit movements in Andhra Pradesh were started in kanchikacherla and these dalit movements paved the way to Karamchedu dalit movement and Tsunduru dalit movements of Andhra Pradesh.[citation needed] Dalits are Politically active in this town as a result of which BSP shares a strong portion of voters in the Elections. From the day Devineni venkata ramana has elected as an MLA in 1996-99, this manadal has grown towards prosperity in richness through various employment opportunities by Industrialization, adequate supply of water and other resources to Agriculture which was continued by his successor and Brother, Sri Devineni Uma Maheswarar Rao.[citation needed] Currently, Sri Thangirala Prabhakar Rao is representing the town in Andhra Pradesh Assembly.[citation needed]
