Kalyan Junction is a major railway junction station on the central line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network, lying at the junction of the north-east and south-east lines of the suburban Mumbai division of the Central Railway, 54  km north-east of Mumbai. It is the third busiest station on Mumbai Suburban Railway after Thane and Andheri, where all mail and express trains halt, and there is a demand to upgrade the station into an integrated railway terminal as Mumbai CST is already saturated to its limits.

Platforms

There are 8 platforms at Kalyan station which are not fixed for specific directions. Platforms are 1, 1A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Platform number 1 and 1A are for Kalyan-originating 'UP' Local Trains.
Platform 2 used for 'DOWN' slow trains.
Platforms 3,5,6 for 'UP' as well as 'DOWN' slow/fast Trains.
Platform 4 for 'DOWN' Local Trains only.
Platform 7 for 'UP' Local Trains only.

Express/Mail trains arrive at Platforms 4,5,6,7 only.

Escalator

After Thane railway station had an escalators installed on two of its platforms, now Kalyan station got its first escalator on platform No.1 and second one had been recently installed.Also,more efforts are required to keep the hygiene conditions better on the platform.

Sheds

The Kalyan Electric Loco Shed and Kalyan Diesel Loco Shed are also located nearby. They are two of the most important loco sheds in CR and are the lone shed serving Mumbai region. Kalyan ELS holds both AC as well as DC locos and is the only shed in India to hold widest variety of locos. The locos of Kalyan ELS and DLS are - WDM 2, WDM-2A, WDM 3A, WDM-3D, WDG-3A, WDG 4, WAG-5, WAG-7, WAG 9, WCAM 1, WCAM 2/2P, WCAM 3, WCAG-1, WCM-6. In future Kalyan ELS is also expected to home pure AC locos like WAP 4/WAP 5/WAP 7.
