Kalpana Patowary (Assamese: কল্পনা পাটোৱাৰী) (musician/singer/composer/recording artist/ record producer) disciple of legendary Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and influenced by Dr Bhupen Hazarika, the 'Bard of Brahmaputra' geographically hails from Assam.

Trained in Assamese folk by her folksinger father Bipin Patowary and Indian Classical music, Kalpana Patowary blessed with a stunning five-octave range and signature vocal abilities, has been hailed as a prodigy in the world of Bhojpuri music. “She gave Bhojpuri Music a new twist”. Critic wrote that she changed the art of Bhojpuri vocals.

Very few people know that Kalpana Patowary is as versatile that she justifies or renders both in raw folk forms as well as western singing.

Kalpana Patowary’s music genre is about primitive-acoustic folk with some trace of Indian classical music, ambient electronic and new age jazz - fusion.

Her first language is Assamese but she sings in Bhojpuri, Hindi, Bengali, English and 25 other languages with around 9000 songs to her credit.

She is deeply rooted in nirgun, purvi, kajree, pachra(devi geet,sohar, vivaah geet, chaita, nautanki, bihu, goalporia folk and many other folk forms from UP - Bihar and presented in a new way to the world.

Recent activities

" Music barons in India were left gaping when Kalpana Patowary, a singer of Indian folk music, was signed on by British recording company Virgin EMI Records in April. They were all the more surprised to see the soaring international demand for her Bhojpuri music album with songs about migration. It seems Bhojpuri folk songs on migration are witnessing resurgence on an unexpected scale."

  • 2013 was a prolific release year for Kalpana. The year started with songs from Hindi film R...Rajkumar, where she recorded for composer Pritam for the song "Gandi Baat" a duet with Mika Singh. The only achchi baat about the film was the song 'Gandi Baat'.The song emerged as the biggest hit of 2013 and topped the charts and well received by music lovers.

Early life and background

Kalpana Patowary was born on 27 October 1978 in Barpeta district in Assam.

A graduate in English literature from Cotton College, Assam and Visharad in Indian Classical Music (vocal) under Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth, Lucknow in 1996, a regular artist Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati, Assam as well as All India Radio (yuba bani) Guwahati, Assam since 1992.

Kalpana first developed an interest in music when she was a child and learned to sing with her father, who had dabbled in folk music in his younger days; in her early teens, she picked up a harmonium and her dad taught her the notes selection. Kalpana began performing as a 4 year old child, singing with her father at local stages and community gathering.

She won the 1st position in the “Bhupendra Sangeet” competition in 1985 amongst numerous artists from the North East.

In “Rabha Sangeet” competition, Kalpana Patowary again won the 1st prize.

She won the “Best singer award” in“Jyoti Sangeet” in the “Barpeta District” competition in 1986.

She was adjudged the “Best Singer” of “Cotton College”, Guwahati 1993-1994 sessions.

She participated in All India Civil Services Competition “Kala Sangram” held in Bhopal.

As a teenager, inspired by Mariah Carey Kalpana developed a taste of western classical music and sang with a local band. After a while, she started professional singing. Upon graduating from college, she travelled around the North East at various local music scenes.

Music career

In 2001, with endless aspirations and immense confidence, Kalpana moved towards Mumbai the dream city of India. This talented Assamese damsel made her debut with a remix album named “My Heart is Beating” with Times Music and by–and–by she didn't look back.

With her debut Bhojpuri album “ Gawanwa Leja Rajaji ” released from T-Series established her as a Bhojpuri star singer by breaking all former records of T-Series, Kalpana Patowary raised a storm which heralded the dawn of new era in the realm of Bhojpuri folk music. Released in 2003, Gawanwa Leja Rajaji strongly resonated with audiences, becoming that year's best-selling album in India and selling in crore units nationwide till date. Kalpana broke milestones with the album which opened the Bhojpuri music industry in India. She has given till date the most hit Bhojpuri numbers in Northern India.

Kalpana Patowary’s first Bhojpuri film for which she sang was Saiya Se Karda Milanwa Hey Ram and the second was Ganga Jaisan Mai Hamar. But the third film really turned to be a milestone and once again it established an industry – yes, Sasura Bada Paisawala. Bhojpuri Cinema was revolutionized by Sasura Bada Paisewala. Made with a budget of Rs. 30 lakhs, the film collected a gross earning of over Rs. 25 crore. Hereafter, there was no looking back for the Bhojpuri film industry.

The best-selling female artist of all time - Kalpana has made an indelible impact on the Bhojpuri music industry and audiences everywhere.

Kalpana acting debuted in the Bhojpuri film Chalat Musafir Moh Lio Re in the title role. Kalpana played the role of a dalit women. She received positive reviews for her acting as well from critics.

COURT RESTRAINS BHOJPURI SINGER NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court restrained Bhojpuri singer Kalpana Patowary from recording or performing music scores for any company other than T-Series till the next date of hearing. The singer had entered into an exclusive agreement with T-Series on December 28, 2002, and agreed to sing for the company for three years with an option to extend it by another two years. A sum of Rs 15 lakh had been paid to the singer.

LANDMARK JUDGEMENT BY NEW DELHI COURT 2008 Kalpana Patowary moved the Delhi High Court and put a case for forgery (an exclusive agreement) on the Indian music label T-Series. The Delhi High court gave a landmark judgment in favour of Kalpana Patowary for recording or performing music scores with any other company.

In 2009, after a lengthy hiatus Kalpana Patowary build her own dream home studio MUSIC BOX STUDIOS in Mumbai.
