KJMS (101.1 FM) is an urban adult contemporary radio station in Memphis Tennessee, and serving the Mid-South, area, owned by Clear Channel Communications.

History

101.1 FM signed on in 1965 as KLYX as a Beautiful Music format. It was around 1972 when the station would flip to a country Music Station.

KWAM 101.1

It is believed the station was sold from Dee Rivers group around 1976 at which time the format and call letters would be changed to KWAM as a Gospel Music Format.

KRNB as Majic 101

In the Spring of 1981 with the emergence of Disco and Rhythm and Blues, KWAM flipped to an Urban Contempory format as "Majic 101". The Station was up and coming and also competing with new comer WHRK which had flipped to a Disco Rhythmic Contemporary Station in 1976. In 1990 the station abandoned the Urban format for an Oldies format as KHUL "Cool 101". The KRNB call letters would return with the Urban format in 1991.

KJMS 101 K-Jams

In 1992 the KRNB calls would be dropped for KJMS as "K Jams" going head to head with WHRK K-97-1 for the Urban Audience. Both Stations were strong in the ratings for a number of years, it is around 1997 or 1998 Dee Rivers group would sell KJMS to Chancellor Media which had also acquired Rival WHRK K 97-1. It is believed around 1998 when the format was changed to its current Adult Urban contemporary and the "K- Jams" moniker and Urban Contemporary were dropped. The KRNB calls would be revived in 1996 in Denton Texas with the same format.

The station originally signed on in 1965 as KLYX with a beautiful music format, later switching to country, while owned by the "Dee" Rivers Group. The "K" in its call sign refers to the fact that the transmitter is west of the Mississippi River although the studios are in Memphis.
