KIWR (89.7 FM) is a radio station broadcasting an Alternative format.[1] Based in Council Bluffs, Iowa, USA, the station serves the Omaha Metro area. The station is licensed to Iowa Western Community College.[2] The station has broadcast alternative rock since January 1, 1996. Prior to that, it played Classical music and Jazz.
Weekday programing
The station is the home of the Morning Fiasco with Spicoli weekday mornings 6 am to 10 am, which includes features like the Uncensored Sports Break, Conjunction and School of Rock which features a guest spot with Sophia John. After the Morning Fiasco its Middays with Tom "Skinman" Skinner from 10 am to 12 pm, followed by Sophia John from 12 pm to 2 pm featuring The Nooner Monday through Thursday but on Friday Sophia has created a highly popular covers show where she plays only cover songs from Noon to 2 pm.
Weeknight and weekend programing
From 6 pm to 6 am students attending the Media Studies Program at Iowa Western Community College start their shifts. 897 The River has always been a learning tool for students attending the media studies program at IWCC.
Specialty shows
KIWR hosts several "spotlight" radio programs that are not subsets of the regular programming. This includes the 24 year old Pacific Street Blues which airs Sunday's from 9:00 am to Noon. Other specialty programming including Music with a Purpose, Planet O (local/regional music), New Day Rising, the heavy metal outlet Sunday School, Keller's Cellar and Grateful Dead hour air from the hours of 6 pm to 1 am. The Pacific Street Blues radio program was nominated for a KBA or Keeping the Blues Alive award in 2008 and its host, Rick Galusha, has been nominated to the Nebraska Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.[citation needed]
