KFSR (90.7 FM) is an American radio station licensed to serve the community of Fresno, California. Founded in 1982, the station's broadcast license is held by California State University, Fresno. KFSR broadcasts jazz, blues and other genres from the campus of California State University, Fresno.

History

Radio station KFSR was founded in 1982 at California State University, Fresno,^[1] a public comprehensive university and part of the 23 campus California State University system. In 1986, the stations began playing the music of Lucia Pamela, an American musician, bandleader, and eccentric who had long "dropped off the map" by the time the station began playing her music.^[2] Playing her music revived interest in it and the station offered a $5 a year for life to the person providing information leading to Pamela's appearance at the KFSR.^[2] A station listener ultimately located Pamela at a bingo parlor by confiscating the microphone during one of the bingo games, asking to speak to Lucia Pamela, who jumped up and shouted "Bingo!"^[2]

For its ten-year anniversary in 1992, the station compiled and produced A Decade of Homicide, Raisins and Heat, a collection of songs by local Fresno rock bands.^[3] The album included an assorted mix of musical styles including alternative rock, funk, ska, Thrash metal, and rock, but not country.^[3] The station's album cover, which included a gun-wielding cow, contributed to the album being seen as a "fabulous novelty and reminder of what Fresno is becoming" - "a community with a growing population and a growing interest in music and the arts."^[3] In 1994, the university's campus station aired coverage of Fresno State volleyball, basketball, and softball home games.^[4]

In 2002, the station celebrated its twentieth-year anniversary by holding a reunion for former KFSR members.^[5] Focusing on it role is to promote local music, the station put together a two-day concert to celebrate KFSR and celebrate local musicians.^[5] The station also produced a 21-track CD of local music to coincide with the bands appearing at the concert.^[5] In 2005, local musicians came together to hold a three-day concert to raise funds for KFSR as a show of support for the station's support for local music for the prior 23 years.^[6] In December 2006, the station began to air A Prairie Home Companion, a two-hour, live, weekly variety program hosted by storyteller, humorist, and National Humanities Medal winner Garrison Keillor.^[7]
