Kåre Hedley "Bruttern" Ingebrigtsen (born 11 November 1965 in Trondheim) is a former Norwegian footballer.
During his career he played for Rosenborg BK, Lillestrøm SK, Manchester City F.C., and Strømsgodset IF as a midfielder. He earned 23 caps for the Norway national football team.
He made 17 appearances for Manchester City, scoring three goals, all of them in an FA Cup match against Leicester City F.C. on 8 January 1994.
He is currently the assistant coach of Viking FK. In 2007 he coached Ranheim Fotball and was the assistant coach of Rosenborg BK.
Club career
Rosenborg BK
Ingebrigtsen began his career with local club Rosenborg BK, giants of the Norwegian First Division. He joined them at age 19 for the 1985 season, during which Rosenborg would win the league. During his time at Rosenborg, they won the First Division three further times, in 1988, 1990 and 1992.
By the time of Rosenborg's First Division triumph of 1988, Ingebrigtsen was well established in the team, and he played in the final as they won the Norwegian Football Cup that year as well. He also played in the replay after the original 2–2 draw with Brann.
He played in the final again as Rosenborg completed their second league and cup double in 1990, scoring the fifth goal as they destroyed Fyllingen Fotball 5–1.
At the end of his final season with Rosenborg, he would play in the final for a third time as Rosenborg defeated Lillestrøm SK 3–2 to win the double for the third time during his spell with the club.
He was not fully established in the team during their 1986–87 European Cup adventure, but was fully involved by the time they returned to European football in the 1989–90 European Cup, where he played in the 5–0 drubbing by Belgian side KV Mechelen.
He played in Europe the following year as well, in the 1990–91 UEFA Cup, but Rosenborg were eliminated at the first hurdle once again, this time by Soviet side FC Chornomorets Odessa. Despite winning 2–1 at home, they were eliminated 4–3 overall.
They returned to the European Cup for 1991–92, in his last season with Rosenborg, only to be dumped out 7–1 in the first round by eventual runners up Sampdoria.
At the end of 1992, he was spotted by Manchester City, of England, and left Rosenborg after eight seasons, 141 appearances and 16 goals.
Manchester City
He joined Manchester City midway through their 1992–93 FA Premier League campaign. He did not play at all as City finished 9th in the league.
He made all of his 17 City appearances the following season, as they slumped to 16th place in the league. Ingebrigtsen thought he had scored his first goal for the club in January 1994, against Ipswich Town, but shortly after his goal, the game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at Maine Road with City leading 2–0. City won the rearranged fixture 2–1, but Ingebrigtsen couldn't repeat his goalscoring heroics.
He finally did open his account for his new club less than a week later in an FA Cup Third round tie at home to Leicester City. He added two more in the same match as the Sky Blues won 4–1. These would be his only goals for them.
At the end of the season, after failing to establish himself in the City team, he returned to Rosenborg.
Return to Rosenborg
After returning to Rosenborg, he didn't play a single game before moving once again to Strømsgodset IF.
Strømsgodset IF
Strømsgodset had a good pedigree, having recently held their own in the European Cup Winners' Cup, but by 1994 they had slipped into decline, and they finished bottom of the league that year and were relegated, despite Ingebrigtsen playing a critical role in the side. At the end of the season, not wanting to play second division football, Ingebrigtsen moved on again, moving to league runners up Lillestrøm SK.
Lillestrøm SK
He played for Lillestrøm during the 1995 season, when they finished fourth. They also reached the semi-finals of the Norgesmesterskapet, but Ingebrigtsen failed to establish himself in the side, and at the end of the season he returned for a third spell at Rosenborg.
Third spell at Rosenborg
Rosenborg had won the league during every season of his absence, and 1996, his return season, was no different. Despite making nine appearances in the first half of the season, he returned to Lillestrøm in the middle of the season.
Return to Lillestrøm
He returned to Lillestrøm after just six months away, and helped them to second in the league again, still behind Rosenborg who he had just left. At the end of the season, he continued his habit of moving clubs every six months, returning to Rosenborg yet again.
Fourth spell at Rosenborg
Ingebrigtsen saw out the 1997 season with Rosenborg, being part of yet another league winning side. However, he was only able to make three appearances during the season, and he retired from playing at the end of it.
International career
Ingebrigtsen made 23 appearances for Norway, scoring one goal, but he had left the side by the time they qualified for the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA, so was never part of a finals squad.
His one and only Norway goal came in a friendly.
Managerial career
Ranheim Fotball
Ten years after his departure from playing for Rosenborg, Ingebrigtsen took up coaching, taking up the position of manager at Ranheim Fotball, then in the 2. Divisjon, the third division of Norwegian football.
He began his managerial career with a brilliant 7–2 victory over Levanger FK. The team remained undefeated at home throughout the season, and only lost five games away from the DnB NOR Arena. They finished the season in similarly impressive form, with a 7–0 victory over Steinkjer FK. However, this wasn't enough to win the league, the only method of promotion, and they finished third. This place was taken by IL Hødd, and Ranheim's 3–2 loss away to Hødd was crucial in the season for both clubs.
Their run in the 2007 Norwegian Football Cup was less impressive. Despite a 5–0 win over non-league Kolstad in the first round, they lost 3–2 to Mo IL in the second.
His impressive management of Ranheim led to him being poached by FK Bodø/Glimt for the following season.
He was also assistant coach at his old club Rosenborg during this period, but gave up his responsibilities there after moving to Bodø/Glimt.
Bodø/Glimt
Bodø/Glimt had just been promoted to the Tippeligaen, Norway's top division, following a play-off victory. They hired Ingebrigtsen to help them survive in the division after three seasons in the Adeccoligaen.
As he had with Ranheim, Ingebrigtsen got off to a winning start with Bodø/Glimt, leading them to a 2–0 victory over HamKam. Brazilian striker Thiago Martins scored the opener just 5 minutes into Ingebrigtsen's reign, and Mounir Hamoud doubled the lead later on.
Bodø/Glimt remained unbeaten at the Aspmyra Stadion until their penultimate game of the season there, when they succumbed 2–1 to Vålerenga, the first match Ingebrigtsen had lost at home as a manager. This impressive form allowed them to finish 4th in their first season in the division, a very impressive achievement.
Equally impressive was their run to the quarter finals of the 2008 Norwegian Football Cup, but this was also ended by Vålerenga in a 3–1 defeat. There impressive run also included a 3–0 victory over Mo IL, sweet revenge for the previous season's loss with Ranheim, thanks to goals two goals from Jim Johansen and one from Trond Olsen.
Thanks to a brilliant debut season, Bodø/Glimt headed into the 2009 Norwegian Premier League season with high expectations. However, things began badly and it took them four games to get a win, 1–0 over Ingebrigtsen's former club Strømsgodset IF. Wins were hard to come by all season, and taking just five points from their last eight games meant that they were 15th out of 16, beating only FK Lyn, and were relegated.
They were also unimpressive in the 2009 Norwegian Football Cup, beating two lower league sides (including FK Mjølner, who they had also beaten the previous year) before losing to Alta IF, who were in a lower league and had been beaten by Bodø/Glimt the year before.
Despite this dire performance, Ingebrigtsen kept his job and faced the 2010 Norwegian First Division, which is deceptively named as it is in fact the second division. Despite losing their first match of the season 1–0 to Mjøndalen IF, they were fairly impressive throughout the season. However, three consecutive home losses late on meant that they missed out on the play-off places by just one single point, to Ingebrigtsen's former club Ranheim.
Heartbreakingly, Bodø/Glimt were eliminated from the 2010 Norwegian Football Cup by Ranheim, 2–1 after extra time.
Ingebrigtsen has begun his fourth season in charge of Bodø/Glimt, and they will hope for promotion from the 2011 Norwegian First Division. However, it has not begun well, and after a 3–0 loss to former 2. Divisjon rivals from the Ranheim days IL Hødd and a 1–1 draw with fellow strugglers Sandefjord Fotball, they lie in the relegation zone.
