Julissa Reynoso

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Julissa Reynoso is a New York City attorney born in the Dominican Republic who, since March 30, 2012, has served as United States Ambassador to Uruguay.[1][2] She is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Central American and Caribbean Affairs at the United States Department of State.

Early Life and Education

A native of the Dominican Republic, Reynoso immigrated to the United States in 1982. She spent her youth living in the South Bronx in New York City, attending Catholic schools where she learned English. She graduated valedictorian of her class at Aquinas High School in the Bronx. She was admitted to Harvard University, where she helped found the student group "Fuerza Quisqueyana", with other Dominican students.

After obtaining a B.A. at Harvard University in 1997,[3] Reynoso obtained an M.Phil. degree in 1998 from the University of Cambridge in England, before enrolling at Columbia Law School, where she obtained her law degree in 2001.

During her college years, she traveled throughout the world, long before she would dream of becoming a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State.

Career

In 2008, she was active in former Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign for the presidency [4] before joining the campaign of then Sen. Barack Obama, the President who would send her name to the United States Senate[5] for confirmation to one of the positions in the U.S. State Department most relevant to her native Dominican Republic.

Prior to joining the Obama administration, Ms. Reynoso was an attorney in private practice and resided in the Washington Heights neighborhood in Manhattan. She also served as a part-time legal fellow at the Institute for Policy Integrity at NYU School of Law for a year.

In October 2011, President Barack Obama expressed his intention to nominate Ms. Reynoso as United States Ambassador to the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, a nomination that required the advice and consent of the United States Senate.[6][7] She replaced former ambassador David D. Nelson, and interim ambassador Thomas H. Lloyd.[8] On March 30, 2012, the U.S. Senate confirmed Ms. Reynoso as United States Ambassador to Uruguay.
