Julian Velard (born 6 October 1979), is an American pianist and singer-songwriter, born and raised in New York City.

Biography

Velard was born and raised in New York City, New York. He attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts and Hampshire College, in Amherst, Massachusetts, where he studied under Yusef Lateef. Before moving to London and signing a UK-based record deal with EMI in June 2007, Velard toured around America and released 3 indie records. He currently resides in Brooklyn.

Career

Touring

He has toured the UK, Ireland, France, the Netherlands and North America, appearing with numerous other acts including Jamie Cullum, Goldfrapp, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Ben Kweller, Horatio Sanz, Amy McDonald, Kate Nash, Rumer, Jose Gonzalez, Shelby Lynne, Marc Broussard, Sonya Kitchell, Michael Tolcher, Tom Baxter, The Clarks, The Damnwells, Ari Hest, Jonah Smith, Sharon Little, Ryan Montbleau Band, The Alternate Routes, Toby Lightman and others.

On November 27, 2007, he made his first appearance in Paris, supporting Kate Nash. Throughout February and May, 2008, he supported Amy Macdonald on her sold-out tour of the UK and Ireland. Velard made his first appearance in the Netherlands in November 2008 at The Crossing Borders Festival, alongside Ben Folds, Death Cab For Cutie and Fleet Foxes.

In November 2011 Velard returned to the Netherlands to play the first ever Songbird Festival alongside Ben Howard and Michael Kiwanuka.

Radio and television

Velard made his UK radio debut in May 2008 with his first single, Jimmy Dean & Steve McQueen. Shortly thereafter, he was featured as "Record of the Week" on BBC Radio 2, and appeared on The Dermot O'Leary Show for "Radio 2 Presents: Julian Velard."

His first commercial single, Jimmy Dean & Steve McQueen was released in the UK on June 16, 2008.

In 2011, two singles from Mr. Saturday Night, Love Again For The First Time and Sentimental, were playlisted on BBC Radio 2, as well as various radio stations throughout Europe.

On May 9, 2008, Velard made his television debut with an interview and performance on This Morning with Fern and Phil. He has since appeared on The Alan Titchmarsh Show and The Review Show as well as Serious Request in the Netherlands.

The Planeteer (2008-2009)

In July 2008, Velard put the finishing touches on his to be released major label debut, The Planeteer. The record is a greatest hits package of Velard's material to date, some of which is culled from The Movies Without You EP. After parting ways with EMI in the fall of 2009, Velard released the record himself on November 23, 2009.

Mr. Saturday Night (2010-2011)

Following his departure from EMI, Velard began writing his follow-up to The Planeteer, Mr. Saturday Night, produced by songwriters Jerry Abbott and Grant Black, and mixed by Steve Power. The album was released in the UK on April 4, 2011 through Velard's own label, Planeteer records. "Love Again For The First Time" was released as a single in the UK on March 10, 2011. The album was subsequently released in the Netherlands on August 12, 2011, and then in the US on November 1, 2011.

The Mighty Lin and online success

In February 2012, Velard wrote a song for New York Knicks point guard sensation Jeremy Lin. On February 20, 2012, "The Mighty Lin" debuted on KnicksNow.com.[1] To date, the video has netted nearly 400,000 views on Youtube and NBA.com.

Velard experienced online success previously with his YouTube cover series featuring the songs of Madonna,[2] Chris Brown,[3] 10cc,[4] Michael Jackson,[5] Kings of Leon,[6] Katy Perry,[7] and Wham.[8] The series netted him over half a million YouTube views.

Velard hosts a weekly online chat show from his apartment called JVTV.[9] On his 30 minute program, he interviews different singer/songwriters and plays with them.

Person Of Interest (2012)

Velard recently announced the release of a 4 song EP for September 2012. The EP was written, recorded and mixed in Velard's Brooklyn apartment. The EP marks his second collaboration with the producing/songwriting team of Jerry Abbott and Grant Black. The EP was released digitally in the Netherlands on September 7, 2012, and worldwide on September 11, 2012.
