Joyce–Collingwood Station (formerly Joyce Station) is located on an elevated portion of the Expo Line, a part of Metro Vancouver's SkyTrain rapid transit system. The station is on Joyce Street at Vanness Avenue, in the area of Vancouver known as Collingwood. It is the sixth busiest station on Expo Line.
History
Joyce–Collingwood Station is on the old right-of-way once used by the old British Columbia Electric Railway Central Park Line; this line ran from just west of Nanaimo Station all the way to where the current New Westminster Station is located.
The station was opened as Joyce Station in 1985 along the original Expo Line. It replaced Joyce Loop, located 600 metres south at the intersection of Joyce Street and Kingsway, as the main transfer point to local transit services in the area. Trolley wire were extended to the station in early 1986 to bring trolley buses to the bus loop.[2]
Formerly an industrial area, the area in the immediate vicinity of this station is being redeveloped as Collingwood Village, a denser community of high-rise condos. The "Collingwood" portion of the name was added in 2001 to try to reflect a positive presence imposed by SkyTrain on the surrounding community, as this station had been known to have a particularly negative community impact in terms of inducing high rates of crime and violence since its opening in the mid-80s. [citation needed]
Service
- The station connects to a number of TransLink bus routes serving eastern Vancouver and Burnaby.
- The station is one of the possible terminus for the proposed 91 B-Line service, which is an upgrade for the current route #43 that runs westward to the University of British Columbia.
- There is currently no scheduled trolley bus service to the station after the dieselization of trolley route #41. However, trolley buses may still be seen in the bus loop during the occasional unscheduled reroutes of trolley route #19.
