Joshua William "Josh" Thompson (born 25 February 1991) is an English footballer who plays as a defender for Colchester United. He has represented England at under-19 level.[3]

Career

Stockport County

Thompson, born in Bolton, Greater Manchester, progressed through the Stockport County youth system. He made his first-team debut for County as a late substitute, coming on for Dominic Blizzard in the 89th minute in a 3–1 win over Southend United.[4] Thompson made just nine appearances in the 2008–09 season, having attracted attention from Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion, having trials with both clubs.[5] In July 2009, Peterborough United had a bid for him rejected.[6]

Celtic

Thompson signed for Scottish Premier League team Celtic on 8 August 2009 for a fee of £250,000.[7][8] He made his debut coming on as a substitute for Stephen McManus at home against Falkirk on 16 January 2010.[9] He made his first Celtic start in a 4–1 away victory against St. Johnstone on 24 January 2010 and scored his first goal for Celtic in a 3–0 victory over St. Johnstone on 20 March 2010.[10] After the match, Thompson say he never expected to score his first goal.[11] He followed this up with two goals for Celtic in a 2–1 victory over Motherwell on 13 April 2010.[12] Despite lack of first team opportunities at Celtic, Thompson was named Celtic's Young Player of the Year Award and upon receiving the award, Thompson says since joining Celtic, he changed his attitude both on and off the pitch.[13]

Loan spells away from Celtic

On 24 August 2010, Thompson left Celtic on a season-long loan for League One side Rochdale, having fallen out of favour with then-new Celtic manager Neil Lennon. He made 14 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal.[14]

On 8 August 2011, Thompson was again sent out on loan, this time to Championship team Peterborough United on a season-long deal.[15] He failed to break into the first team, and was allowed to leave in January 2012.[16] He then joined League One club Chesterfield on loan until the end of the 2011–12 season.[17] He made 23 appearances in all competitions for Chesterfield, scoring one goal.[8]

Portsmouth

Thompson signed for recently relegated League One club Portsmouth on 31 August 2012 on a short-term contract.[18] After joining Portsmouth, Thompson says he had no-regret leaving Celtic; stating his decision decision was a no-brainer.[19] He made his debut in Pompey's 3–0 away victory over Crawley Town on 9 September 2012.[20] However, after making just three appearances for the first-team, he suffered an ankle injury in training that kept him out of action for six weeks.[21][22]

Thompson was told he has no future at Portsmouth[23] and on 9 November 2012, he was loaned to fellow League One club Colchester United for one month.[24] He made his debut for the U's as a 90th minute substitute during a 2–0 win over Bury on 17 November.[25] After joining Colchester, caretaker manager Guy Whittingham says Thompson has a future at Portsmouth.[26] He made five appearances for Colchester during his stint, including being sent-off in his final loan appearance, a 3–1 home defeat to Brentford.[27]

Colchester United

Thompson agreed to join Colchester on an 18-month contract from 1 January 2013 following the expiration of his contract with Portsmouth.[28] After being displaced by Tom Eastman in the Colchester starting line-up, he regained a spot in the team following an injury to Eastman in March 2013. Thompson then scored his first Colchester goal on 16 March 2013 with an equalising header from a Billy Clifford cross against Bury, a game which Colchester went on to win 2–1 over their relegation-rivals.[29][30][31]

Following a pre-season schedule blighted by injury, hampering his start to the 2013–14 season, Thompson suffered another injury set back having made only one Football League Trophy appearance so far in the season. The ankle injury he sustained required an operation, leaving him out for three months.[32]

International career

In July 2010, Thompson appeared for England under-19s in the European Under-19 Championship making three appearances in the finals,[3] before his team lost to Spain in the semi-final.[33]

Personal life

Following Robbie Keane joining Celtic, Thompson revealed Keane was his idol while growing up.[40]
