Josh Papalii (born 13 May 1992, in Auckland) is a New Zealand-born Australian professional rugby league footballer for the Canberra Raiders of the National Rugby League (NRL) competition. Papalii is a hard running second rower/lock who made his NRL debut for Canberra in 2011.[1]
Biography
Born in New Zealand, Papalii moved to Australia at the age of 6 and was raised in Woodridge, Queensland, playing his junior footy for Logan Brothers.
Professional playing career
Papalii played 20+ games for Canberra's Toyota Cup side before making his NRL debut in the Raider's win against the Melbourne Storm in round 10, 2011.[2]
He had, perhaps, the best performance of his still young first grade career against the Brisbane Broncos in round 14 of the 2011 season. He scored two tries back to back to help lead a Raider's comeback, coming from 24-0 down to level the game 24-24, before losing in extra time.[3]
In 2010, he represented the Queensland under 18 side and was selected in the Junior Kiwis' training squad, although he did not make the final side. [4][5][6] He was selected for the Junior Kiwis in 2011.[7]
In 2012, Papalii pledged his representative allegiance to Queensland and Australia. In December 2012, he was named in Queensland's Emerging Origin Squad. [8]
Papalii first gained selection for the Maroons for Game II of the 2013 State of Origin series.[9] He continued in Game III, helping Queensland extend their record for consecutive series victories to eight. Due to Papalii's outstanding performance during the 2013 season he was selected in the Australian international squad for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup
