Joseph Jankovic, M.D.

Joseph Jankovic, M.D. is a neurologist currently practicing at the Department of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.[1]

Dr. Jankovic has served as the principal investigator on over a hundred clinical trials and his pioneering research on drugs for Parkinsonian disorders and hyperkinetic movement disorders, such as Botulinum toxin (Botox) and Tetrabenazine, has led to their approval by the Food and Drug Administration.[2] Jankovic is a past president of the Movement Disorder Society,[3] and an Honorary Member of the American Neurological Association.[4]

Jankovic has been repeatedly listed in ISI Highly Cited Researcher, Americas Top Doctors, The Best Doctors in America, Marquis Who's Who in the World and other Marquis Who’s Who references.

Medical career

After receiving his MD degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 1973, Jankovic completed medicine internship at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, and residency in Neurology at the Neurological Institute, Columbia University, New York City. At Columbia University, Jankovic was selected as the Chief Resident and obtained additional training in movement disorders with Stanley Fahn, MD.[5]

In 1977 he joined the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine and became a founder and director of the Parkinson's Disease Center and Movement Disorders Clinic, which has since been recognized as a "Center of Excellence" by the National Parkinson Foundation and the Huntington Disease Society of America.[6]

Promoted to a full professor (with tenure) of Neurology in 1988, Jankovic holds the endowed Baylor College of Medicine Distinguished Chair in Movement Disorders. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is a fellow of the AAN, and an active member of many other professional organizations.[7] Jankovic is a current or past member of numerous scientific and medical advisory boards of national foundations including the Worldwide Education and Awareness for Movement Disorders (WE MOVE), Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, International Tremor Foundation, Tourette Syndrome Association, and the World Federation of Neurology Association of Parkinsonism and Related Disorders.

Jankovic is a member of the executive scientific advisory board of The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the National Parkinson Foundation Clinical and Scientific Advisory Board. He has served on editorial boards of Neurology, Movement Disorders, Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, Acta Neurologica Scandinavica, Journal of Neurological Sciences, Neurology Medlink, Clinical Neuropharmacology, Neurotherapeutic, Expert Review of Neurotherapeutics, Journal of Parkinson’s Disease, and other journals.

Jankovic has published over 800 original articles and chapters, and edited or co-edited over 50 books and volumes, including several standard textbooks such as Neurology in Clinical Practice and Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders (along with a video atlas), both currently in 5th edition. He also co-authored a book (and DVD) entitled Principles and Practice of Movement Disorders.[8]

He has co-directed the annual course "A Comprehensive Review of Movement Disorders",[9] in Aspen, Colorado since 1990. Invited as a key note speaker and an endowed lecturer, Jankovic has directed or lectured in annual American Academy of Neurology courses, MDS-sponsored Congresses as well as other international meetings.[10]
