José Angulo (born January 13, 1988 in Barranquilla) is a Colombian-American footballer player who plays for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the USL Pro.
Career
Youth
Angulo grew up in Clifton, New Jersey, and attended Saint Benedict's Preparatory School, where he was a teammate of fellow professional Nelson Becerra. He was a Parade Magazine All-American at St. Benedict’s, and was widely regarded as one of the best high school players in the country.[1]
Professional
Angulo turned professional straight out of high school,[2] but despite numerous trials with clubs in Europe was unable to secure a professional contract. Returning to the United States, he signed a contract with Major League Soccer as a "discovery", and was assigned to the New England Revolution, but was released by the team during the 2009 MLS pre-season having only played in a handful of pre-season friendlies.
He played one game for the Newark Ironbound Express in the USL Premier Development League in 2009, and scored 10 goals for the Central Jersey Spartans in 2010,[3] before finally signing his first professional contract in 2011 when he signed with the Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL Professional Division.
He made his professional debut on April 23 in a 1-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds,[4] and scored his first professional goal on May 7 in a 1-1 tie with FC New York.[5] In his first year with Harrisburg City Angulo led the club with 9 goals in 26 matches.
On March 5, 2012 it was announced that Angulo had agreed to terms with New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer.[6]
On November 19, 2012, New York Red Bulls announced that they would not be picking up the contract option for Angulo, making him a free agent. [7] During his time with Red Bull, Angulo only made one appearance, coming in as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur on July 31, 2012. [8]
On April 3, 2013, Angulo returned to USL Pro by signing for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.[9] At approximately the half-way point of the 2013 season, Angulo had scored 10 goals in his first 13 matches. This tally was second only to Dom Dwyer of Orlando City SC who had already broken the league single-season goal scoring record earlier in the season. Angulo's performances included a 5-game scoring streak which saw him recognized as the USL Pro Player of the Week for week 14 of the 2013 USL Pro season.[10] Angulo continued his impressive form during the 2013 season by scoring in the 3rd minute of a friendly match against reigning FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic F.C. on July 19, 2013. Despite taking the early lead, the match ended in a 1-4 loss for Pittsburgh.[11] On the final matchday of the 2013 regular season, Angulo scored Pittsburgh's only goal in a 1-1 draw with the regular season champion Richmond Kickers. With the goal, Angulo tied Dom Dwyer's goal tally of 15 for the season but was crowned scoring champion on total points, with a total of 34 to 31, after he tallied four assists and Dwyer tallied only one. Angulo's 15 goals tied Dwyer for the all-time single season USL Pro scoring record.[12][13] At the end of the season, Angulo was named USL Pro league MVP.[14]
On 29 October 2013, it was announced that Angulo signed a 2-year contract extension with the Riverhounds, along with 2013 assist leader Matthew Dallman, despite strong belief that he would attract interest from clubs in Major League Soccer or other higher divisions during the offseason.[15]
