Jonathan Veitch
Jonathan Veitch (born 1959) has been the 15th president of Occidental College since July 2009. Prior to that, he was a professor at the University of Wisconsin and dean of The New School's Eugene Lang College.[1] He has authored several books, including Colossus in Ruins: Mythic Geographies and Lost Histories in the American Provinces and American Superrealism: Nathanael West and the Politics of Representation in the 1930s.[2]
Education
Veitch attended Loyola High School in southern California before he received his bachelors degree from Stanford University. He later received his doctoral degree in the History of American Civilization from Harvard University.[3]
At Occidental College
Veitch succeeded Robert Skotheim as president of the College on June 30, 2009.[4] He has worked to improve relations between the College and the surrounding community. Veitch also limited expansion of the campus into the community, appeasing neighbors.[5]
Veitch is the first president of Occidental College to be a native Angeleno, being born in Los Angeles. He currently lives in the Wallis Annenberg President's House on the Occidental campus with his wife, Sarah, and their three children.[6]
In April of 2013, Veitch was accused of an alleged cover-up involving the sexual assault of 49 students, a large number considering the small campus population of around 2000. Members of the Oxy Sexual Assault Coalition filed two federal complaints against the college, which is now currently under investigation. Specifically, Veitch has been accused of alleged retaliation against whistle-blowers, delivering weak punishment to accused rapists (including a 2 1/2 page essay), and generally ignoring or downplaying complaints.
