Johnny Brown (basketball)

Johnny Brown is a retired American basketball player and currently a seasoned college basketball assistant coach. He is a member of the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds coaching staff.[1]

Playing career

Brown stands at 6'6" and played collegiate ball with the University of New Mexico Lobos from 1982-1986. During his stay he was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection and his name is still listed four times in the Western Athletic Conference record book, for single-season scoring average, field goal percentage, field goals made and three throws attempted. Brown graduated with a degree in university studies, sociology and speech communication. He entered the 1986 NBA Draft and was chosen as the seventh pick in the 7th round (146th overall) by the Los Angeles Clippers. Brown never got to play in the NBA but took his game to the WBL notably with the Las Vegas Silver Streaks. He was chosen on the 1988 All-Defensive Team[2] as well as being a three-time WBL All-Star. After playing for five years in the professional ranks, he joined the coaching fraternity.

Coaching career

Brown is a 14-year veteran of the college coaching ranks. He has worked at the Division I level, serving on the staffs at Fresno State, Montana State, Northern Iowa, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi during his career. Brown helped Fresno State to NIT bids in 1996, ’97 and ’98 but left the Bulldogs to help establish the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi program, which played its first season in 1999-2000. He also helped coach Eastern Oklahoma to a regional final appearance in 2001-02 and a semi-final appearance in 2003-04. Brown came to SUU from New Mexico Junior College where he spent the last season as an assistant. He works with the Thunderbird big men and guards as well as with conditioning, scouting, recruiting and on-the-floor coaching.
