John M. Wightman (born October 2, 1938 in North Platte, Nebraska) is a Nebraska state senator from Lexington, Nebraska, United States, in the Nebraska Legislature. He is also an attorney with the firm Wightman & Wightman.
Personal life
He was born on October 2, 1938, in North Platte, Nebraska and graduated from Sumner High School in 1956. He attended Kearney State College, now the University of Nebraska at Kearney, earning a B.S. in 1959. Following a year as a teacher, he attended University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law, graduating in 1963. He is married and has three children. One of his children, Jeffrey, has joined him as a partner in the small law firm Wightman & Wightman in Lexington. Prior to being elected to the State Legislature, he served on the Lexington City Council from 1973 to 1978 and again from 1988 until 2000. He was also the mayor of Lexington, Nebraska two times, first 1992–1995 and again from 1997 until 2000.
State legislature
Wightman was elected in 2006 to represent the 36th Nebraska legislative district, which includes much of Dawson County, and most of Buffalo County. Major communities in the district include Cozad, Overton, Elm Creek, Gibbon, Gothenburg, Lexington, Ravenna, and Shelton. He currently chairs the Executive Board of the Legislative Council, which is the closest thing to being a majority leader in the non-partisan unicameral.
