John Lazar (1 December 1801−8 June 1879) was an Australian actor and the Mayor of Adelaide from 1855 to 1858. Born in Edinburgh, Lazar came to Sydney in 1837 where he worked as an actor and theatre manager. He first came to Adelaide in 1841 but was unsuccessful; later, in 1841, he returned to the city with greater success. In the 1850s he opened a jeweller's shop and became an alderman in 1853. He left the city council in 1859 and moved to New Zealand, where he died in 1879.[1]
