Overview

John Kennedy College is a pre-eminent high school found in Vuillemin, Beau Bassin in Mauritius. Founded in 1963 and inaugurated by the then Governor General Sir John Shaw Rennie. The school bears the name of former American president John F. Kennedy and since its foundation, it has met with many alterations in both the structural and pedagogical system.   The main areas of focus of John Kennedy College are the Sciences, Technical Areas and Economics. John Kennedy College was initially more technically oriented, basically because when the school was built it had state-of-the-art workshops and equipment. However, over the years the school also made its name in the field of science.

John Kennedy College students are also known as Kennedians and the school's emblem is the Bald American Eagle.

It has over the years produced a number of high calibre students of whom many were laureates, eminent politicians and professionals in Mauritius. Students from John Kennedy College have eventually gained places in prestigious and world renowned universities for example: University of Cambridge, London School of Economics, University College London, Stanford University, University of Warwick, Manchester University etc...

The Eagles

The Eagles is the name of the school magazine published by the school. School Magazines existed since the 70's and continued through years. The first school magazines were published monthly but however, it was then published annually. Students could express their ideas and their vision through the magazines. The Eagles at the time were very successful. One famous part of the magazine was the famous quotes by JKC teachers. The most recent magazine is Eagles 2013, a magazine which commemorated the 50 years of existence of the school. This magazine is the first one to be completely designed by the students themselves. The magazine is expected to be a new start in the JKC school magazine era. Previously, school magazines were named "The Eagles" but however, the next issue is entitled "Eagles 2013" just to symbolise a new start in the timeline of school magazine.

The magazine is notable for its secrecy. Nothing was leaked during preparations. To protect that, no activities involving the magazine were done in the school compound. However, during the final stage of the publication, some final touch were done in the computer lab at JKC with the team forming a crowd round the computer. Eagles 2013 was released on the 20th of June 2013 by the Hon. Dr Vasant Bunware and within 30 mins after its launching, 300 copies of the magazine were sold . The magazine is still on sale at Rs 125 in the school. The magazine will still be available throughout the year due to the number of kennedians and former students who have tight schedules.

JKC Golden Jubilee

In 2013, the John Kennedy College celebrated the 50th anniversary laying of its foundation stone. A souvenir magazine entitled "Eagles 2013" covering the history and present of the school was launched. The rector launched a special program for the two years celebration of the 50th anniversary. The official 50th anniversary of the opening of the school will be celebrated in 2015. An official former students association is to be created soon connecting kennedians from all decades together with the actual students in upper six who are the first batch of students to enroll JKC again as from form 1, soon to be the former students.
