John Joseph Nevin (born 7 June 1989), more commonly known as John Joe Nevin, is an Irish professional boxer. He won the Irish national boxing title and qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics at the age of 18. Four years later he qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, winning a silver medal. He is widely thought of as the golden boy of Irish boxing.
Early life
Nevin was born in Mullingar, County Westmeath, and is a member of the Traveller community.[1] He attended Scoil Mhuire CBS primary school in the town. He was born John Joseph Nevin but is more commonly known as John Joe .
Career
Nevin lost 11:14 to Aaron Casey at the 2006 World Junior Championships at 48 kg. Nevin qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics by winning the 1st European Qualifying Tournament. Nevin subsequently won the 2008 European Union boxing championships.
In the 2008 Beijing Olympics he beat Abdelhalim Ourradi 9–4 in his first round before being beaten by Enkhbatyn Badar-Uugan 9–2 in the round of 16. On 9 September 2009, Nevin guaranteed Ireland a historic sixth medal at the 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championships after he beat China's Yu Gu in Milan. He won his quarter-final 7–5.[2] In the semi-final he lost by 5–4 to Russian Eduard Abzalimov, and so took away a bronze medal.[3] In Baku, Azerbaijan he qualified for the 2012 London Olympic games by reaching the quarter-finals of the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships, subsequently he reached the semi-finals by beating Orzubek Shaymov of Uzbekistan 19–17 to claim another world championship bronze medal, as a result he has the distinction of being the first Irish boxer in history to claim two world championship medals. He was very very controversially beaten by Britain's Luke Campbell by a countback.
In 2012 he beat his cousin Michael Nevin in the final of the Senior National All Irelands 23–3 to win his fifth national senior title in a row. He boxes out of Cavan boxing club under coach Brian McKeown. He signed with the Paris United Team in October 2010 in "The World Series of Boxing (WSB") and helped them win the Championship.
Nevin won his first fight in the 2012 Olympic Games, defeating Denmark's Dennis Ceylan by a wide margin of 21–6.[4] In his second fight of the games he saw off Kazakhstan's Kanat Abutalipov by a margin of 15–10.[5] In his quarter-final bout he beat Oscar Valdez to secure a semi-final place and a guarantee of a bronze medal.[6] He then reached the final after defeating the reigning bantamweight world champion Lázaro Álvarez of Cuba 19–14.[7] He won silver, losing in the final to Luke Campbell of the UK 14–11.[8][9]
Nevin reportedly said "he wants his legacy from the Games to be a closer relationship between Travellers and the settled community."[10]
On 6 October 2012, John Joe Nevin announced to the public on The Saturday Night Show that he is turning professional.[11] In November 2012 Nevin changed his mind about turning professional and signed for the British Lionhearts in the World Series of Boxing next season.[12]
Nevin was unable to defend his national title in 2013 because he injured his wrist while sparring in the high performance, the title was took by Declan Geraghty from Crumlin boxing club. That didn't stop the Irish Amateur Boxing Association from picking John Joe as there number 1 choice for the 2013 European Boxing Championships being held in Minsk later that year.
In June 2013 he won a gold medal at the 2013 European Amateur Boxing Championships in the Bantamweight division.[13][14]
In October 2013, Nevin announced that he had turned professional.[15] Speaking on 22 October 2013, he said "This is the next step for me. I've done everything I wanted to do in the amateur business, if I could change the colour of the Olympic medal I would but that's done and now it's time to move on and hopefully bring back a world title to Ireland." Nevin signed a management deal with a business sports partnership that includes GreenBlood Boxing from Philadelphia and Berkley Sports & Media from London.[16]
