John Hardwick is an English television, film and theatre director.

Early life

He was brought up in Bebington, Merseyside. He studied at Swansea University and Louisiana State University and has a degree in English Literature and American Studies. In 1990 he moved to London to begin his career as a director.

Career

Hardwick has made numerous short films including the award-winning Mule and To Have And To Hold which starred Suzanne Lothar.

In television he has directed The Trial for Channel 4's Coming Up slot, Hollyoaks Later, and Nearly Famous, a teen drama which starred Aaron Johnson.

Hardwick has made two feature films. The first was 33x Around The Sun, a microbudget art-house picture released in 2005. It was described as "a one of a kind vision quest" by Time Out magazine and a "daring and thoughtful debut" by The Independent newspaper. In autumn 2013, his second feature, Svengali, will be released. It is a comedy drama set in the London music industry and stars Jonny Owen and Vicky McClure.

Hardwick's third feature is a documentary titled Follow The Money. It follows a month in the life of a ten dollar bill as it criss-crosses the United States. The film is already shot and is due for completion in 2014.

Hardwick has also directed award-winning television commercials as well as music videos for the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Dido, Jake Bugg, Travis and Manic Street Preachers.

Hardwick intermittently works as a theatre director too, and between 1996 and 2000, he co-devised and performed international touring shows with the award-winning company Blast Theory. He is currently an Associate Artist of Volcano Theatre Company with whom he has collaborated on a number of touring shows, and in 2006 he directed the first ever stage adaptation of Max Frisch's Gantenbein for the Hebbel Am Ufer Theater in Berlin. In 2008, he directed the afternoon play Death of a Pirate for BBC Radio 4. Hardwick also wrote the play in collaboration with the lead actors Michael Smiley and Jo Hartley.
