John Christian Vaughan
John Christian Vaughan is a Sydney historian, vexillographer and public speaker. [1] He is the former CEO of the Royal Australian Historical Society. [2]
Among his other credits, he is the national spokesperson for the Australian National Flag Association and was employed as an expert commentator by Channel 7 for the First Fleet re-enactment during the Australian Bicentenary in 1988. He is the founder of Australian National Flag Day. [3] [4] Vaughan is also the designer of several notable and circulating Australian flags, including the flag of Willoughby local council, non official concepts for a greater Sydney ensign, which forms part of the gallery of flags on display at Central railway station, Sydney, and the flag of Lord Howe Island. He has devised several heritage and commemorative flags, such as the Australian Christmas flag, and for the First Fleet reenactment. [5][6]
Early Australian vexillographer
On 29 November 2013, Vaughan was featured on the front page of a local newspaper The North Shore Times, with the announcement that as a result of his efforts, the terms vexillographer along with vexillography, which had first appeared in an interview with Vaughan carried by the same publication in 1976, will be included in subsequent editions of Australia's Macquarie Dictionary. Publications
As a vexillologist, Vaughan is the author of a well known Flags of Australia chart, included in an Australiana poster series featured in Australian schools from the 1980s. [8]
