John J. Browett (born 10 December 1963)[citation needed] is a British businessman and CEO of Monsoon Accessorize, who among other positions, was a senior vice president of retail at Apple Inc., taking over from Ron Johnson. He joined the company in April 2012 and left in October 2012. Before joining Apple, he was a chief executive of electronics retail group Dixons from December 2007. He previously had been the chief executive of Tesco.com.[1][2][3] Browett holds a degree in natural sciences from the University of Cambridge and a MBA from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.[4]
Departure from Apple
On Monday, 29 October 2012, Apple announced, via a press release, that John Browett would be leaving Apple and that a search for a new head of Retail was underway.[5] This announcement was made less than a year from Browett taking up the post.
During his tenure at Apple, he instituted many unpopular changes at the retail store level, including cutting staffing levels, the sacking of newly recruited employees, the suspension of both transfers and new hiring and a general attempt to cut down on maintenance, payroll and general expenditure. His changes, though reversed, had a lasting effect on store level morale and were extremely unpopular even at manager level. It has been suggested by many industry figures that this was a major reason for his departure.[citation needed]
