John Baring (merchant)
John Baring (5 Oct 1730 – 29 January 1816) was an English merchant banker and MP.[1]
He was the son of clothier John Baring of Larkbeare, Devon and educated in Geneva. His brother was Francis Baring.[1]
He inherited an Exeter-based clothing business on his father's death in 1748 and, together with his younger brother Francis, extended his interests to London by setting up the company of John and Francis Baring. Although the senior partner he soon retired to Devon and left the running of the business to Francis, under whose guidance it evolved into Barings Bank.[1]
Back in Devon he founded banks at Plymouth and Exeter and became interested in politics. After unsuccessfully contesting Honiton, he was elected Member of Parliament for Exeter in 1776. He was alao appointed Sheriff of Devon for 1776.[1] He retired from Parliament in 1802.
He died in 1816. He had married Anne, the daughter of Francis Parker of Blagdon, Devon, with whom he had two sons and four daughters.
