Joel Tobeck was born on June 2nd, 1971 in Auckland, New Zealand. He has over 20 years acting experience in New Zealand and Australia. He comes from an acting background, with his mother Liddy Holloway being a well known theatre and TV actress in New Zealand. Tobeck attended the Auckland Performing Arts School where he trained as a dancer.

Career

Tobeck is known for his part as Tim Williams in the Australian television series Tangle and as Donny, in the American series Sons of Anarchy.[1]

In the early 1990s Joel Tobeck was the breakfast show weatherman on Auckland radio station 95bfm. As a singer and guitarist, he often performed with friends in bands such as The Applicators, Wide Lapels, Bard's Band, and Splitter. He was in the Darcy Clay band and appeared in the house band Tadow on the TV3 show Ice As where he was famous for his Mick Jagger impressions.[2]

One of his first big acting breaks came when he was cast in New Zealand hospital soap opera Shortland Street in 1996 as a baddie in a wheelchair. [3] He followed this up with film roles in Sure To Rise, Peach and Topless Women Talk About Their Lives. Tobeck had recurring roles in the cult TV fantasy series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys as Strife and Xena: Warrior Princess as Deimos, which exposed him to American audiences and led to appearances at fan conventions in the United States.[4]

Tobeck played the main villain Creegan in the TV Series Cleopatra 2525. He has also appeared in films such as 30 Days of Night, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (under a lot of makeup) and in Eagle Vs Shark, also starring Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords fame.
