Joe Volk is an English musician and songwriter based in Bristol.
Solo
Volk is signed to Invada Records as a solo artist[2][3] and released his debut album 'Derwent Waters Saint' in 2006. The album was recorded, engineered and produced by Adrian Utley,[4] guitarist with the band Portishead. Volk started recording a new album in January 2011, again working with Utley, as well as Emmy nominated composer Ben Salisbury.[5]
His last solo performance in the UK was in 2009 at the Colston Hall,[6] Bristol. He performed with the Bristol Ensemble chamber orchestra as part of the 'Invada Invasion'[7][8] event curated by Geoff Barrow. Volk started playing live again in February 2011, playing a handful of shows in Finland.[9][10]
He is the Great Grandson of electrical engineer and inventor Magnus Volk.
Bands
He was first signed to Invada Records as the singer with hard rock band Gonga. Volk left the band in 2007, after writing and releasing two albums with the group.[11]
Volk is also the singer and lyricist in Crippled Black Phoenix, a band founded by Justin Greaves in 2004. Together they are signed to the publishing division of Domino Records[12] as the writers of the group.
Since releasing Derwent Waters Saint, Volk has released seven albums and four EP's with these bands.
Other work
Volk composed the music for the National Geographic documentary Cryonics – Freeze Me. His song 'The Sun Also Rises' was featured in the BBC short film 'Small Dark Places'.[13] He has worked on several projects with the visual artist John Minton.[14]
