Professional kickboxing career
Marciano, a third degree Black Belt, was rated in the top-20 of the world superlightweight ranks in 1984-1985. In the September 1985 issue of Official Karate Magazine, Marciano was rated 20th in the world in the 135.1-140 pound weight division of the STAR System World Kickboxing Ratings. His 1985 record was listed as 18 wins (8 by knockout), and 10 defeats.
Marciano began his career under the training of Dania, Florida Sensi Bert Rodriguez. Rodriguez ran the U.S. Fitness Center in Dania, Florida and many of the top South Florida kickboxers trained there.
Marciano had a "straight ahead" style of fighting. He moved in to his opponnent and started throwing punches and kicks; rarely taking a backward step.
With his blonde hair, lean build, and exciting fighting style, Marciano developed a large local following in the Miami-Dade and Broward Countries of South Florida.
After compiling a string of knockouts, Marciano fought WKA welterweight world champion Howard Jackson in a non-title bout. Marciano lost the decision, but went on to fight three other world champions. He lost a decision to welterweight king Yoel Judah, and on July 8, 1983, Marciano lost by 2nd round kick-knockout to former undisputed world middleweight champion Steve Shepherd in Miami,FL.
In 1979, Marciano fought future world lightweight champion Mike Bell in West Palm Beach, Florida,.[2] and lost by technical knockout. In March 1980, Marciano lost a decision to prospect Richard "Action" Jackson.[3]
In 1985, Marciano lost a decision to 12th rated Super-Lightweight contender Mark Gurley of Rockledge, Florida.
Following the loss to Shepherd, Marciano retired. However, he launched a comeback a year later; winning 3-straight matches including a victory over David "Wild Man" Ruiz in California.
On April 5, 1986, Joe Marciano knocked out undefeated point-karate champion Mike Fernandez in West Palm Beach, FL in 1 round.[4] Following the match, Marciano said, " You're only as good as your last fight." With those parting words, Marciano retired.
