Jim Tomes (born July 31, 1948) is a Republican member of the Indiana Senate, representing the 49th District since 2010. He received support from the Tea Party and is a proponent for typical conservative causes including smaller government, with fewer regulations and oversight. For example, he has supported measures to require Indiana public teachers to recite the Lord's Prayer. He has supported calls for legislation to allow anyone in Indiana to carry and conceal a handgun without a license. For 33 years, he was a trucker and served as a union steward. Because of his history and ties to organized labor, he broke ranks with Republican leadership in the State Senate and the administration of Republican Governor Mitch Daniels to oppose the so-called "right-to-work" legislation that became law in Indiana in 2012.^[1]
