Ji Chang-wook (born July 5, 1987) is a South Korean actor. He is best known for his leading roles in television series Smile Again and Warrior Baek Dong-soo
Career
Ji Chang-wook began his career as a struggling actor in musicals.[1] He made his onscreen debut in the 2006 film Days... and had a role in the 2008 TV drama I Like You (also known as You Stole My Heart). In 2009 he appeared in My Too Perfect Sons, playing the timid, "sissy" youngest brother who ends up raising his best friend's daughter while just 20 years old. The family drama received 40% ratings, and shot Ji to stardom out of obscurity.[1] He followed that with a supporting role in Lee Jun-ki's Hero.
In 2010 Ji was cast in his first starring role in the 159-episode daily drama Smile, Dong-hae (also known as Smile Again). Playing a Korean-American short track speed skater, Ji trained under a former national speed skater in order to lend those scenes as much realism as possible, spending four to five hours daily at the ice rink. His character Dong-hae was raised in the US by his adoptee mother, and in hopes of finding his biological father, he flies to Korea and works as a hotel chef.[2] Smile Again topped the ratings chart for 15 consecutive weeks, and Ji was awarded Best Actor in a Daily Drama at the KBS Drama Awards.[3][4]
He played the titular character in 2011 action historical drama Warrior Baek Dong-soo. Adapted from Lee Jae-heon's manhwa Honorable Baek Dong-soo, it is an origin story about Joseon-era swordsman Baek Dong-soo, showing his growing up years until political intrigue creates a rivalry with his childhood best friend-turned-enemy.[5][6] The series was number one in its timeslot for 13 weeks, and Ji received a New Star Award from the SBS Drama Awards.[7][8]
Later that year, he again played the lead role in cable drama Bachelor's Vegetable Store, based on the true success story of Lee Young-seok, a young man who turned a tiny 350-square-feet vegetable store in 1998 into a nationwide franchise with 33 stores.[9]
In his first villain role, Ji played a pianist who envies his older brother's genius and natural gift for music in 2012 melodrama Five Fingers. Conflicts and passions come to a head as the brothers compete over their father's piano manufacturing business and the same woman.[10][11][12]
Ji returned to the stage in 2013 with The Days, playing a presidential bodyguard who went missing 20 years ago along with a mysterious female companion. The Days was a jukebox musical using the folk rock songs of Kim Kwang-seok.[13] He then played Park Gyu-ri's love interest in Have You Had Coffee With an Angel?, an episode in the five-part omnibus drama Secret Love starring members of the girl group Kara.[14] Later in the year, he was cast as Toghon Temür (also known as Huizong), the 16th emperor of the Yuan Dynasty who marries the Goryeo-born titular character in historical drama Empress Ki.[15]
