History
Jhikargachha (Bengali: ঝিকরগাছা) is an Upazila of Jessore District in the Division of Khulna, Bangladesh. Jhikargachha Upazila (jessore district) with an area of 307.96 km2, is bounded by Chaugachha Upazila on the north, Kalaroa Upazila on the south, Jessore Sadar Upazila and Manirampur Upazilas on the east, and Sharsha Upazila on the west. Its main rivers are the Kapotakkho and Betna. Jhikargachha (Town) stands on the bank of the Kapotakkho, consists of 9 wards and 14 mahallas. The Jhikargachha Municipality was established in 1988. The area of the town is 16.34 km2. The town had a population of 27823 in 1991; male 50.88%, female 49.12%. Literacy rate among the town people is 48.3%. The town has one Government rest house.
Administration
Jhikargachha thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 11 unions, 164 mouzas and 179 villages. Archaeological heritage and Remnants of Jhikargachha are the Rajbari of Mukut Roy at Laujani(12th century), Dargah of Gazi Kalu.
Historical events
Jhikargachha is named after the idogo planter Jhinkar. Bir Shresta Nur Muhammad Sheikh was killed on 5 September 1971 at village Goal Hat in an encounter with the Pakistani army. In April 1971 many people were killed and wounded when the Pakistan army attacked Krishnapur. Relics of the War of Liberation are Memorials 1, mass killing site 1.

Jhikargachha is located at 23°06′00″N 89°08′00″E / 23.1000°N 89.1333°E . It has 43439 units of house hold and total area 307.28 km².
Demographics
As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Jhikargachha has a population of 235882. Males constitute 51.24% of the population, and females 48.76%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 119652. Jhikargachha has an average literacy rate of 27.9% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]
