Jay C. Voss (born April 22, 1987) is a professional baseball player who is a free agent. He was selected in the eighth round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft by the Florida Marlins. He attended Mater Dei High School and Kaskaskia College.[1]
In 2007 Voss made his professional debut with the Short-Season Jamestown Jammers. He was 0–7 with 35 strikeouts and a 7.63 earned run average in 15 games—11 of them starts.[2]
Voss spent the 2008 season with the Class-A Greensboro Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League.[2] After 11 starts, Voss was moved to the bullpen to become a relief pitcher on July 19. He went 2–5 with a 7.24 ERA as a starter and 1–1 with a 4.15 ERA in 15 relief appearances. He went a total 3–6 with a 6.39 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched.
In 2009 Voss split the season between the Class-A Advanced Jupiter Hammerheads and the Double-A Jacksonville Suns. He went 0–1 with 10 strikeouts and a 2.03 ERA in 10 games with Jupiter. With Jacksonville, Voss went 3–0 with 36 strikeouts and a 2.97 ERA in 30 games. Voss went a combined 3–1 with 46 strikeouts and a 2.72 ERA in 49⅔ innings pitched.[1][2][3] After the 2009 season Voss was assigned to the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League.[4]
On March 30, 2010, Voss was traded to the Detroit Tigers for Nate Robertson and cash considerations.[3] As of June 10, 2011, Voss was pitching for the Tigers' Double-A affiliate, the Erie Seawolves.[2] Voss underwent Tommy John surgery in May, 2012.[5]
In December, 2012 the St. Louis Cardinals selected Voss in the Rule 5 draft.[5]
